Now that I’m elbow-deep in the land of Bavaria, my love for the E36 is at an all-time high. And of course the high point of the generation here in the states is the 318ti. So now my new project goal is to find a 318ti, swap in an N52, and supercharge it. Simple, right?

Why not get an N54 if you’re going to boost it anyways.

Just a heads-up, the rear suspension is more E30 than E36.

M10 is still the best BMW motor for boost.
I don't know why that's not more popular.

Not necessarily a bad thing.

Wood rather have a super than a twin-turbo for a car this small.

Pardon my ignorance of the older engines. Which one is the M10?
![]() 08/21/2016 at 21:43 |

Fair enough.
Also the M10 was the 4 cyl motor offered from the mid 60s to the late 80s

Hmm, I should add this to my long list of “maybes”

Most importantly, boosted to insane power levels by F1 teams during the 80's. According to legend, they preferred used high milage engines since it tempered the steel in the block. Don’t have a source, could be completely wrong.
But it sounds AWESOME.

Yeah that is kind of a selling point hah. Coming from an e30 guy though, there is a lot of stuff that is compatible with little to no fabrication

I’ve heard the same rumor, apparently they went to junkyards and pulled the block from cars that had done over 100k miles cause any defects in the casting would have manifested themselves by then. I mean they were running something like 5 bar (72 psi) of pressure.

Just get an E36 M3

You need a lot of oxygen in those little combustion chambers to make 1000+hp. That's for sure.

Can’t find a non-convertible one that isn’t torn to shit for less than 12k. That would finance this entire project and I’d have a lot faster car.

wait you can supercharge the n52? I thought it wasn’t recommended because the cylinders are unlined. That would be awesome on my 128i. What does the 318 weigh? It would be a blast with a standard N52 I bet!

Good to know!

As far as I know the only recommendation against FI on the N52 was regarding turbos. A Supercharger is a lot less aggressive in its pressures, and ESS tuning already has a kit that’ll for your car.

It’s not, just warning you before you think about swapping in all-E36 M3 handling parts only to find out only the front-half of the car is compatible.

Well shit. Guess I need to be in ebay more.

They’re out there. Plus you get better suspension, brakes, and chassis.

Fucking goddamn MEGATRON.

M52, yes. N52, no.

I’ve been toying with the idea of dropping the m62 from my e38 into a 318ti.
Unsure if possible, but I do like the idea.

Do it! Oppo needs more Compact/318ti love! If I still had mind I’d go full Zoidberg and post pictures of it all the time. They’re super underrated and like the others have mentioned before, the rear suspension components are from the E30. Engine swaps should be no problem, the front half of the Compact is identical to the rest of the E36s.

Why you say that?

I just moved home from the DE and the E36 M3 availability over there is seriously limited now. I swear in my 3 years they went from 10 for sale on mobile.de for less than 10k to all bring ring tools at over 12. The price for a us spec one is still low but they know full well why we want to buy the euro spec Ms from 1990-93 and they aren’t cheap anymore.

Are you in the DE or just in the cars :)
I just moved back and seriously wish I would have scooped up an e36 m3 back in 2014 before they went up in price.

Someone running my local Autox has one of those with a supercharged S54. Thing is absolutely insane.

Because the M52 is a drop in and nearly plug & play swap, and is an all around much better engine than any of the N series. I’ve done an S52 swap into a Ti, it makes a ridiculous fun car.

In the DE?

Germany, Deutschland, DE

oh really? I did some work for ESS a while back.

Huh. I guess this came out after you stopped working with them then.
